WAITING FOR THE RAINS

After a long break, we are back with some news.

In the middle of June 2014 the students came back after their summer vacation. A few of the small kids felt home sick after having spent a month at home and getting plenty of attention and care from their family members. Now they are settled again and are full of life.

Normally 15 June is the time that the monsoon sets in. This year we had to wait till 20th June for the setting in of the rainy season. For one full day we had heavy downpour, but since then it is as if the monsoon has not yet arrived. There are regular showers of rains with heavy thunder storms and lightening, but these are more like premonsoon showers and the real monsoon rains. Lightening struck the transformer and for a several days we had not electricity. We had to manage with our generators.

This break in the monsoon has given us a chance to complete the construction of drains for diverting the rain water, flowing from the village into our campus, to the two ponds, which we dug a few years ago. The ponds are in fact water harvesting structures and the level of the water in the open well in the lower field depends on the level of the water in the pond.

The new Dining Hall, which was completed this year, is serving as a multiple purpose hall. The boys take their meals in the hall when it rains and in the evening it is the study room for the small kids. Earlier they used to sit in the verandah of the dormitory, but during the rains it is very difficult to keep that place and dry for the boys to sit.
